Communication Techniques in Families

We decided to spend more time focusing on communication and its effects. We have taken time to discuss how in communication, there are words, there is tone, and there is expression. Most of the time while communicating, one that is focused the most, typically, is the tone. The tone can have various effects when communicating with someone such as a spouse, family member, or other people they may be in communication with. Depending on the tone, depends on the response from either spouse in that communication. We also focused on the five techniques involving communication and how they play a role in it. The first three involve empathy, the fourth involve assertiveness, and the fifth involves respect. The first technique is the “disarming technique,” where they find some truth in what the other person is saying, even if it seems completely unreasonable or unfair. The second one is the “empathy technique,” where the spouses let each other know that they are aware of how they feel. The t...

Managing Stress and Cognitive Distortions

Throughout the week, we spent some time focusing on the topic of stress. Not only in individuals, but in families and couples as well. We talked about a lot of the factors that contribute to stress, for many individuals who are in school, their stress is caused by the amount of schoolwork that they may be expected to accomplish every week. Stress is a normal part of life, at times, it depends on how we respond to stress that may either help us or break us. There are always ways to cope or overcome stress in life. We also discussed the ten cognitive distortions that people may experience. Those ten distortions are all-or-nothing thinking where you view things in absolute and black and white categories. Intimacy in Marriages

Throughout the week, we have learned about a subject that sometimes can be a little uncomfortable, depending on how it was talked about, but also essential to know so it can help us in relationships and marriages. We have learned about the kinds of relationships that couples have with each other when they are intimate. One of the sets of data that we looked at is when men and women reach the high peak of sexual pleasure. For men, they reach it around the age of 18 or 19, for women, they reach it around the ages between 30-35. We also talk about the kinds of chemicals that are released when pleasure is felt, for example the chemicals we talked about was dopamine, serotonin, and oxytocin. Oxytocin is the chemical where it helps us feel close to the person we are with. Oxytocin also comes into play for women after they give birth to their children and they want to be close to their children. One of the other models that we looked at was the circle between two factors of when cou...
